It May Surprise You How Many Don’t Recognise A Flirt

According to new research, many of us may not be able to recognise a flirt, even when they are flirting with us! Pretty surprising really – the fact is, if we think someone is uninterested in us  then we are probably right on the money, but if someone is interested in us, we are likely to miss it. Doesn’t the thought of all those missed connections really make you angry?

The research by the Communication Research department of the University of Kansas studies 52 pairs of single college students and had the pairs sit in a room and discuss what they though the study was about for 10-12 minutes. Following this the students were asked to fill out a questionnaire in different rooms to ask if they flirted and if they thought their pair was flirting too.

The students were 80% correct when determining that their pair was not flirting with them, but when it came to actual flirting, most were completely oblivious. Only 36% of men noticed correctly when someone was flirting with them and women a shockingly low 18%.

According to the lead researcher, Jeffery Hall: “Behavior that is flirtatious is hard to see and there are several reasons for that. People aren’t going to do it in obvious ways because they don’t want to be embarrassed, flirting looks a lot like being friendly, and we are not accustomed to getting our flirting validated so we can get better at seeing it.”

The researchers also found out that third-part observers were no better at detecting flirting than the participants themselves. They were 66%  accurate when flirting did not occue and only 38% when it did.

Maybe we all need just make our flirting a little more obvious in order to get noticed.
