Men Flirt to Alleviate Boredom
Ladies, before you get too flattered that the office hunk is throwing you lingering looks over the photocopier, he could be doing it just because he is bored. A study of 200 people by the UK’s Surrey University has found that it isn’t lust or passion that drives a man to get frisky in the office, it is instead his boredom which is the driving force.
A questionnaire indicated that these office flirts (unsurprisingly) had lower levels of ’emotional intelligence’, meaning they had reduced understanding of the feelings of other people. This could mean that office flirts are unable to suppress their risque behaviour, being unable to judge when flirting was inappropriate.
Contrary to the men flirting due to boredom at work, women who flirt at work were happier in their jobs, a follow up study found. The study also aimed to find out if flirting at work could improve an individuals chance of promotion. But, results indicated that this was not the case.
Adrian Banks from Surrey University, who ran the study said: “Flirts don’t perform better at work and men who flirt are less satisfied with their jobs. There is strong evidence against the notion that you can flirt your way to the top.”
If you are a cheeky office worker, maybe it is time to re-evaluate your career choice.
