For any kind of relationship success, you only need to say thank you
It seems the secret to a successful relationship is way more simple that anyone could have thought. It isn’t little surprise gifts, it isn’t sharing a Facebook page and it isnt a foot rub at the end of the day. The secret to relationshup success is saying thank you. And it is not just romantic relationships that benefit from the power of thank you, it is literally all relationships that can be strengthened.
It isn’t just good manners to say thank you, it can help maintain relationships. Think about it, when you hold a door open for someone and they don’t say thank you, doesn’t it make you furious? And that is just a stranger. So it stands to reason that it would be even more annoying if someone you are close too doesn’t bother to say thank you when the situation calls for it.
Thank you is proposd to be so important because of the ‘find-remind-and-bind’ theory of gratitude, first proposed by University of North Caroline psychologist, Sara Algoe. According to the theory: Gratitude – from someone saying thank you – starts new friendships (find), this orients people to exisiting social relationships (remind), and promotes exisitng relationships (bind).
So if you want to improve the state of any of your relationships, make sure you say thank you when someone does something for you. Or be rude and alone your whole life…whatever!
